MonsoonLightning over a 3D Sonoran desert, with saguaros and copper weather controlsNo. 04

We wanted to make more stuff just for fun. After Night Shift, a little desert weather felt like a good place to go.

Monsoon is a Sonoran desert at dusk. There's a storm gathering over the mountains, a few saguaros, and a copper instrument for making the weather considerably worse.

Tap the sky for lightning. The thunder takes a little longer to reach you when the strike is farther away. Drag to push the wind, hold to bring the rain, or turn up the storm and let it sit for a while. There's a Dust button if you'd like a haboob with that.

Lightning over the desert in Monsoon
A little weather. No forecast to get wrong.

The whole page is the place

That was the part of Night Shift we wanted to keep. The toy shouldn't sit in a box on a page. The page should be where it lives.

So the desert reaches the edges of the screen. The controls have worn copper edges and dark glass, and the storm changes the light around them. The landscape and sky are built in code. The rain, wind and rolling thunder are synthesized in the browser too.

Choose Just watch and the controls get out of the way. A storm moves through, the rain lets up, and the sky opens to stars. The wet ground catches the light and the saguaros keep a little glow. There's also someone making their way across the valley, if you stay long enough.

We couldn't put the smell of desert rain in a browser. There's a little rising shimmer over the ground instead.

Save a postcard keeps a picture of your weather. It happens on your device, with nothing uploaded. There are keyboard controls and a gentle weather option, and the toy pauses when you leave the tab. If 3D isn't available, a painted desert takes over.

There's nothing to win. We just thought it'd be nice to make it rain for a minute.
